Project 03

Comments:
My major weakness with this project was craftsmanship. The paper I used was GREAT for the color, but way too think to fold and especially with two sides.
  • use thinner paper
  • print double-sided
  • put actual stamp on it?
  • smaller map
  • what is my 'secondary typeface' for this company?
  • Tomato. not Tomatoe.
  • Hand draw the map
  • more subdued red, and possibly darker brown
  • leading on Cheddar page

Project 1 - Logo Ideas

I really needed a crit. on this. I'm glad I got some feedback on this. Obviously the tomato will not have a gradient in the end, because those are usually unsuccessful and generally ugly. Also, the personal aspect of my sketches has been lost after I put it on the computer. I am going to try sketching it neatly, scanning it in, and turning it into vectors.

Good Logos / Bad Logos

Good Logos:
The FedEx logo is great. First of all, the fact that they have made the d and the E touching with absolutely no space in between.  It sort of combines their colors together to make orange and purple very distinctly theirs. It also sort of makes 'FedEx' look like a truck, or the dE look like a box. The coolest thing about this logo is the intended arrow that has been created by the negative space between the E and the x. It shoes that FedEx is moving packages forward, towards you, or whoever you want them to go.

I am not an Obama fan, so that should tell you how strongly I feel that this is a good logo. The choice to split the 8 or B in half with two different colors, and to change the O or 0, does just that. It makes these symbols play as two different things. It creates the word Obama, and emphasizes the year, '08. When one reads this they are pairing those two ideas (Obama, and 08) together without much thought. The color choices are also good ones because they are true American colors, these colors came straight from our country's flag.

The Pinterest logo is brilliant. First of all, it is very strongly catered to ladies.  The choice of red color, and the font with all of the ligatures really helps to display who the audience is.  In addition, the smaller logo (top) shows three things: it has a P, an i, and it looks like a pin. Brilliant!

The Sherwin Williams logo has been this way for a while. I think it's so cool. Although, they did not really display the name of their store, besides the paint bucket, that is okay, because they're a well-known, corporate company.  The Cover the Earth part is the part that is very creative, in my opinion.  The Earth is barely showing, but you can tell what it is because of the shape, and the detail in the portion of the Earth that you can see.  It just makes someone want to go and re-decorate. It makes someone get the idea planted in their head to paint something, paint everything! Cover the Earth.

The Rio logo for the 2016 Olympics is great. The use of different colors that go with the traditional colors of the Olympic Rings is a very successful idea. Also, the way these shapes created a ring of people is excellent. This is a main focus for the olympics, to unite people.  In addition, the people also resemble the letters, R i and o. The font choice of Rio2016 helps with this, and the movement overall is great.

Bad Logos:

This is a sports logo for the Arkansas Pine Bluff Golden Lions. HORRIBLE. Have you ever seen a lion this way? It's mane is all over the place. It looks very unnatural and kind of like fire. In addition, the bright choice of red for both the tongue and the one showing eye seems like a poor choice. The eye should not be the same color as the tongue, and it should definitely not be that bright. And the fact that they are trying to make the eyes so scary, hence the red, but only one eye is even showing, is just thoughtless.

This is the logo for Rome for the olympics. The olympic rings looks nice, and even the fact that they used such famous, and traditional imagery of the animals on top is not an awful idea. It is just way too busy. Nothing seems to go together here.  The little triangles on the outside of the lettering seem a little silly, or unnecessary. Also, the animals are way too detailed for a logo. It would be smarter, I think, to keep it simpler, maybe a silhouette, or an outline. Or somehow working it in to match the olympic rings or the letters a little better.

The Kroger logo has been like this forever. I don't get it. Why the extended K and g? The only reason I can see that this has been done is that someone must have been playing around with the word, and thought it looked cool this way around the o. To me, this has nothing to do with groceries at a good value, or opening up another register for me. The color choice is okay, because it seems American, and safe, and standard. People are not looking for crazy colors at a grocery store, unless it is something like Trader Joe's or Whole Foods, or a Farmer's Market, which Kroger is clearly not trying to be.

I just cannot take this logo seriously. The cheap glare effect on each shape is just tacky. I can see that maybe while using a webcam or something, there may be glares apparent, but why would anyone emphasize that? I think this group of shapes is supposed to somehow make an eye. An eye has little to do with logic, or technology, which seems to be where the name came from. The fact that one of the "eyelashes" is red does not make sense, and really crowds the logo up. It is also missing that great shiny effect that the other shapes have, which makes it look unfinished, as terrible as that shine is.

The Virgin mobile logo is another that I have never understood. The way the word mobile is displayed is so typical, and boring, and seems unnecessary. If Virgin mobile were a successful company, people would know it is a mobile company, and to put that word there, especially so large, would not be necessary.  The way virgin is written seems to be irrelevant to mobile phones.  The campaign does tend to try to make their phones seem fun, and young, and hip. This font though, seems to just be something someone happened to like. It's nice, it looks okay, but displays nothing about the company or the product.

Business Brief – Burger Joy

Burger Joy is a sketchy looking takeout place in the same parking lot as a Chevron.  It has a boring sign simply displaying that they have both American and Chinese fast food available such as wings, lo-mein, and of course, burgers.  The interesting thing about this place is that it is so well liked in Grant Park, a neighborhood that overall seems to like things more ‘green’ and ‘natural’.  The reviews of Burger Joy on the popular site, Yelp.com, are from some dedicated locals who frequent Burger Joy often.  The most positive aspects of this business are that it is open late (until 3:00 am), they deliver, and they are close.  These things may be true about other companies but Burger Joy has it all. Fast food chains are open late, but don’t deliver, and usually only have American food. Chinese places typically don’t deliver very late, and Burger Joy is a unique, non-chain, local place for people living in and near Grant Park to get something to eat late.  Although the location of this business is not ideal, they are doing well regardless.  Any place that sells food in or near a gas station is not typically where the general public would go to get something to eat.  Their sign is very boring, and a bit scary looking.  I would like to really take up the emotions and feelings attached with the word ‘Joy’ which is in their name but not accentuated at all.  Joy is something the customers are saying that they feel when they receive their food delivered to their house, since they are usually in no condition to be driving.  When it is late, and you are a young person or a college student, junk food being delivered to you is ‘Joy’. I would also like to add some bright colors to their logo, as the idea of joy is given off with bright colors, as well as the young customer base.  Red is definitely something I have in mind based on the original sign, fast food, and the feel of a classic burger.  Some classic design aspects are also to be used since burgers are such an all-American, all-time, classic food.

Business Brief – Grant Park Pool

The Grant Park pool is a great opportunity for families living in Grant Park, however, most families that I’ve met around my neighborhood never go there. The unfortunate thing about this pool as that in the middle of the day, during the week, it is free for a few hours.  This deters families from buying a membership or even from going during the time when it is free because the people who go there are mostly people without jobs, who come to the pool because they have nothing else to do.  They usually bring a lot of friends with them, and get loud tend to make the entire pool become crowded. This makes the ideal pool attendees, like a stay-at-home mom and her children, not want to come.  A family is looking for a fun thing to do on a weekday during summer vacation and because of the large crowds of low-life adults, families rule this option out for cheap, summer fun.  Another negative is that these people often don’t even live in Grant Park, but more likely People’s Town, as you can see them all getting on and off the same bus when the free time begins and when it ends, and that bus goes through People’s Town, the neighborhood adjacent to Grant Park.  My goal, since I cannot change the rules of the pool, or the way they are running things, would be to create a new design aspect that would cater to Grant Park members, especially families with kids.  I would like to create a fun, family-friendly logo with summery and child-like colors.  Obviously blue would be in the palette because it gives off a feelings of refreshing water, which is a great selling point on a summer day in Hotlanta.  I want the font to seem buoyant and fun, so probably something more bubbly or thick.

Business Brief – Restore, Habitat for Humanity

The Restore is a place I am very familiar with.  I am renovating a house in Grant Park with my parents, so we go there a lot.  It is by the Habitat for Humanity, where people may donate household items large and small. The restore then sells these items for a profit and that money goes into building houses for the less fortunate.  There are a few locations but it is a small and new business, and will likely remain small and local.  ReStore receives donations anywhere from hinges, to bathroom tubs and chandeliers. The location in Buford has a much different inventory than the one in Grant Park, but both have the same idea. In Buford, the items being donated are from local businesses or homeowners and are more common items for people who live in a suburb like Buford or the neighboring areas.  The Grant Park location has more unique, and more expensive, items, due to the fact that people are always renovating in Grant Park, like many neighborhoods in Atlanta, and many people living nearby are very creative, and like eclectic things.  The benefits of the ReStore are that it is, by nature catered to the people who will shop there, they are a company that is trying to better the community, and it is local, or easy to get to from pretty much any neighborhood in Atlanta.  My ideas for re-designing the ReStore logo would be to bring the ‘helping’ aspect to the foreground.  The logo now does have a house, and has good colors, green and blue, because these things to help to portray the idea of what this business is all about. However, I think that could be pushed a lot further.  I think currently the logo is very corporate, and it needs to have a more comforting, at-home feel. I want to portray a sense of helping or giving, and I want people to look at the sign, or business card and know that this is a great group to support.
